Artist's
Statement
Every time I paint, my experience is different and new. I never know
what I'll come up with from one time to the next. The outcome depends
on my mood, the weather or even the material I'm painting with. No
two paintings have the same energy.
Often
I'll think about the life and times of what I'm painting and wonder
who, what and why? At times the painting will reveal these answers to
me.
My passion
for rural landscapes began with my short stay in Romney, West Virginia.
I got to know many of the people and learned about their farms dating
back many generations. Just out of college with the skills of an Illustrator,
Animator and Industrial Designer, I set out to capture some of the old
barns and rolling landscapes with my fountain pen and a pad of illustration
board.
Today
I still carry a vested interest in capturing the ever-changing landscapes
that warm my heart. While painting Plein Air (on location), I can capture
the true essence of a place as I respond to it. A photograph cannot
reveal this.
There
is no reason to limit myself to one subject matter. I enjoy painting
and drawing people as well. I find the human anatomy to be fascinating.
For many years I have studied the way all the bones and muscles combine
to make up the dynamic human figure. I can apply similar rhythms to
the landscapes and other interesting subjects that find their way to
my paper and canvas.
The same
creative energy flows through my hands when I volunteer my time at the
weekly Hands
of Gold Healing Clinic in Cotati. I am in tune with my body as well
as the person I work with, just as I am in tune with the environment
around me when I draw and paint.
